Hi! What I had actually intended to ask before I got distracted by your great 'forget you' post was if I might link to this tutorial on a post at weebabystuff.com, if you'd rather I not use your images that's absolutely OK.
I would, of course, be including a link, plugging the frankly awesome site you have here, and providing a link to your etsy shop.
Hope to hear from you,
Erin

Yes... Since I did the mural, I've come across the birdie in many other places.
As I said, the bird illustration is original from Simon Oxley, and he's made it available for purchase (royalty–free) at istockphoto.com. I loved sharing with him what I did with his illustration, and his response was beautiful... He's an awesome artist, and a great guy too!

You are a master! It really turned out terrific, Maria.

I like the idea of the little boy leaving his nest. When he's ready to fly, maybe it can become a rampaging , manly eagle or something! LOL. Okay wild imagination. When you are finished with web design, you could hire yourself out to paint nursery murals. Seriously.

I loved the explaination and frankly, I wouldn't have thought to be that precise, but it makes so much sense. I usually um, wing it.:)

That's interesting, I did just attempt to read a book about the Sistine Chapel and they mentioned using paper templates to paint the fresco on the ceiling!

Ha ha!... Thank you Mandarine... It was my first time painting on walls. I don't think I even did it as a kid, so it felt really nice.

The projector is in fact the way how many people suggest you do the transfer of the drawing to the wall. I don't have one at home, so that's why the first thing that occurred to me was to create a paper template... which I later read somewhere, is the way how the old masters did their murals a long time ago.

I'm not sure though, if the projection and your head between it an the wall let you trace the image with the same fidelity as the paper template. Maybe somebody reading this who's used a projector could tell us... Do you get crisp edges you can follow, or just an approximation that you end up freehanding?...

The other consideration that was relevant for this project, but maybe not for many others is: I had to trace and paint an outer outline, and then do an inner one inside the branch. I wonder if the setting up of the projection the second time would've gone smoothly and give me a perfect alignment of the projected image over the painted one to keep the offset between the outlines consistent throughout the whole image.

Ah, well... And without the paper template you couldn't <a class="piclk" title="see photo" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/mstultz/1449820459/in/set-72157602179269482/">make the masks</a> that were so necessary for painting this very intricate design.
