Knock knock… Who’s There?… The Financial Crisis.

Life • November 10th, 2008

While I have managed to ignore all the ugliness currently going on in the world, out of my home, the financial crisis has finally knocked on my door…

No, we’re not having financial trouble, thank God! Three years ago, when we were buying a home as a student and a freelance web designer, things would’ve been a lot harder had the financial markets been as tight as they currently are, but we were spared that time. Things are fine for us now. I’m just shocked to have learned that one of my top five shopping places is going out of business. That’s right: Linens ‘n Things is having a liquidation sale and I can’t believe it.

LNT, along with Target, Barnes & Noble, and now Joann, is one of the stores where I’ve spent most of my shopping cash since I came to live in this country. Mervyns, a large department store in my local mall is also going out of business. Now, although I was not a Mervyns shopper, I must confess that I recently discovered their baby clothing brand, Sprockets ®, and I was falling in love with it. Too bad they will be gone too.

Once more, I’ve caught Joaquin’s cold. This may be my fourth since he was born (I don’t think I had had four colds in the previous ten years). I have a runny nose, sore throat, and don’t feel great, overall. But despite the bug, and despite the rain welcoming this morning, I think I’m gonna have to go out today and shop at my local dying LNT. I need shower liners, bed sheets, and plastic containers… Things that have been on my shopping list for months but I haven’t gotten around to buy because there was no rush; LNT wasn’t going anywhere. Except this time, they are. I could also go to Bed Bath & Beyond, but then, I wouldn’t get to say goodbye to my old friend.
