The seat doesn't come out to a stable position, BUT you just gave me an idea worth a try. This is my macabre plan:

Beginning this week, I'll move the swing to Joaquin's bedroom (it's currently on our bedroom). After a few days, when he's settled on his new napping location, I'll reduce the rocking speed by a number. I'll keep reducing the speed gradually over a few days or weeks, until the day that the swing will not rock at all. Hopefully at that point, being motionless in his bedroom, and probably uncomfortable on the swing (but maybe not; it's kind of cozy like a bassinet), he may be more willing to give his crib a try. Fingers crossed!

Thank you all for your input. It validated my thoughts, and gave me a plan. The saga continues...

Does the swing seat come out of the swing, so it could be just set on the floor and be motionless (no swing in sight).... but letting him having the comfort of his place, but with it not moving maybe it would lose it's charm....with time he could maybe have the cover of the seat to take to bed with him......maybe he could graduate to a "big boy's swing" outside for awake times....

we never had to worry much about the swing...the binky was the big one for Andres....someday, I'll tell you how we did it.....a little sneaky, but it worked and makes a great story now! Adriana never used a binky, so weaning her of her index finger was next to impossible....fortunately, none of them arrive at age10 with diapers, binkies or sucking fingers.....

Yes. That's exactly my fear about waiting too long. Right now he wants that nap, but seeing how one day he went through the day with just 15 minutes of sleep, I'm afraid that later (and even now), he may drop the nap entirely if he can't have it in the swing. I do fear that later is worse than now :(

that's a tough one. :( We've got our own personal battle with the bink coming up shortly. Sigh. and then Elise woke up curled in the closet this morning. We're certainly no experts.

Knowing myself, I'd get him out of the swing though. Otherwise, you could end up with him giving up naps when he can't go in the swing any longer. It's less likely he'll give them up completely now..., but in 6 months or a year, he might. Nana has said that Joey would've still been taking naps if he could've at 5, so, although Joelle quit at 2.5, I'd take the gamble that Joaquin might take after his daddy and nap well into his toddler years.

I understand what it was like when Jojo quit - it's so hard to lose what little precious time you get. On that note, we had broken down and hired a maid for 2009. I was using all my free time cleaning, I hope this helps around here. It's such a luxury for me!

I thought of introducing a small pillow on the swing. The padding may be better for his head?... But I thought it might not be as comfortable, so that might achieve what you're saying Chris. However, the option that is winning points with every passing hour is leaving things as they are and dealing with the consequences (hopefully just fuss, but NOT flat head) later.

It seems that if he really needs that nap (and it seems like he does) then he will get used to taking it in the crib. I know that's easy for me to say!

One thing you can do to get him less excited about the swing is to do something subtle to make it more uncomfortable?

We were lucky in that we didn't have to deal with weaning off the swing - both girls gave up on that pretty early.
