First Kill

Life • November 10th, 2009

“Look Joaquin! A little insect!”, I point out to “Doro the exploradoro” during our morning walk. His tiny fingers immediately catch the poor crawling bug, and by the time I’m down to his level, telling him to hold it GENTLY, I can see that the thin black patitas are not moving any more. Joaquin offers the apparently–dead thing to me, and I make him drop it (I can’t touch insects). Poor bug falls on the concrete, motionless, and Joaquin immediately steps on him as he decides to continue his walk.

It’s only until then that my mind quits beating me over having lost my chance to get an appointment for Joaquin’s H1N1 vaccine. By pure coincidence, I learned yesterday that our local Health Department clinic would start taking appointments this morning. After finally making up my mind to decide that I do want Joaquin to take the vaccine, this morning I dialed the constantly busy appointment line every 3 minutes (or less) for 1 hour and 45 minutes, when it finally picked up my call to give me an automated message announcing that all appointments were filled now. It was only until then, that I went to their web site and realized that I could’ve scheduled the appointment online — of course dude couldn’t tell me that important detail during the many times we talked on the phone yesterday. Grrr!!! Was I upset…

So Joaquin’s first insect kill was the thing that finally made me stop thinking about it. And by the time we were getting him ready to take his nap, while reading his “Gift of an Angel” book, I was able to let go and just trust that his little angel will help us protect him until I can get the stupid shot next time it comes available, God knows when…
