Mafe Maria: Personal stories by autism parent mentor, Maria Stultz

The Blind Box

In order to help Joaquin warm up to and interact with a new person, I created this game around the idea of showing Jessica (our newest team member) where things go in the Magic Room. He got to do all the fun things (pull out objects from the Blind Box, put stickers on the poster board to mark items done, and also tell Jessica where things go (a challenge?.. not at all today!).

It was a fun activity to see where Kiki is on interaction with two adults at the same time, and he got to impress Jessica with his reading skills.

As a small variation, the list of contents from the Blind Box was presented as a layout of randomly placed items (as opposed to a sequential vertical list).

GOALS: Interaction with a new person. Variation.
MOTIVATION: Newness (he loves new games and props), lists, stickers, control.
