Mafe Maria: Personal stories by autism parent mentor, Maria Stultz

He swims!

It was so cold and rainy today, I bribed Joaquin with delicious mama desserts if we stayed cozy at home rather than going to swim. Yet, he didn’t move:

“But dude! This is the day in which I am going to swim!”.

What do you say to that?… “I’m so excited! I can’t wait to see that! Let’s go!”.

At the pool it looked like any other day, and I forgot the promise of big breakthrough until Joaquin noticed that his swimming style took him to half the lap between the two walls where we were. He asked me to stay at that mark so he could swim to it again. I did. He swam. Next time I moved a little farther, to 55% (Kiki’s big in percentages). He swam and got to me. I moved again to 60%. Success again. I tell him he got to 60% and it’s on. Now we go for 70%, 75%, 80%, 90% and the so glorious 100%.

Once he did that, he repeated success a couple more times and decided to stop and go home. Wise man.

My sweet boy!… Watching him swim so hard, so determined, so crazy close to not making it, but reaching for that last bit every time, it reminded me of being a child and on the same boat.

Big day for my Kiki today, and I think I’m more excited than him about the development.
