Mafe Maria: Personal stories by autism parent mentor, Maria Stultz

A lovely place to rewire.
I walk and my brain is busy… Pruning, building, and strengthening neural connections dormant for years.

my trail

Towards the beginning of the trail there’s a spot that scares me.
Trucks and strange men, and I don’t feel safe.
In previous days I’ve exited the trail before getting there.
But today, a fork appeared to my right. It took me around the wolves and put me ahead on the path.

I’ve unleashed a storm and I’m in the eye of it.
— Turn right.

I’m scared!
— THIS is the moment.

I’m sad…
— FEEL IT. Let it wash over and through you. I promise: It will pass.

— The manual has been fully downloaded. The lasso is fully charged. All you have to do is take one step at a time. Don’t try to read ahead. What’s the next step?

To speak
— Yes. And next?

A story
— Now what?

— And now?

A dance
… A song
… A walk
… A picture
… A nap
… These words
— Yes. Those are very potent. Now what?

— Yes. No shame. That too.

I’m coming back and can see trouble ahead
— Turn left

I think I’ve forgotten something
— You haven’t. NOW YOU CHOOSE THIS. [snaps fingers]

[eyes open]
Yes Goddess. Thank you. I’m back.
